Where We Work

About Osteopathy

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy was originally devised to be an improved system of medicine in the 1870s. The idea was to improve outcomes for illnesses and conditions by working through the musculoskeletal system to improve blood flow to and from areas of the body. The idea was also to influence the nervous system, especially the spinal cord, which sends nerves throughout the body so changing its responses can alter different situations. We carefully observe the spine's function, even when problems seem unrelated to it, and over time our focus has become more on the musculoskeletal system for its own issues. Osteopaths are therefore taught about all the systems of the body with reference to the musculoskeletal system.

What does an osteopath do?

The role of an Osteopath is to make sense of issues presented by a client, then devise a treatment plan to help, then put that plan into practice. This may involve hands-on treatment, along with exercises and advice, and diet and lifestyle advice may also be given.

What conditions can osteopathy help with?

Typically 50% of people who consult our Osteopaths do so for lower back trouble, however osteopathy has been shown to be beneficial for conditions including minor sports injuries, joint aches and pain, headaches and migraine prevention, neck pain, circulatory problems, cramp, rheumatic pain, shoulder pain and frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, arm, wrist and hand pain, digestion problems, lumbago, sciatica, muscle spasms, fibromyalgia, neuralgia, inability to relax, hip, knee, ankle and foot pain, and middle back, lower back and pelvic pain. This is not an exhaustive list; if you do not see your condition there, please get in touch and we can discuss further.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Ideally loose-fitting clothing like shorts, loose tracksuit bottoms and a vest top. Tight clothing, skirts/dresses, denim and corduroy present some difficulty if worn to the session. It is necessary to remove some clothing, especially in the initial session, to assess someone accurately. We have a private changing area for your comfort as well as gowns if clothing does need partially removing. We never expose more than is necessary and only what the patient is comfortable with, and chaperones or family members being present can be arranged and are welcomed.
